Query : My 4 yr old daughter has been complaining that her privates hurt for a couple months on and off. I notice that her vaginal opening can be red at times, but she has no discharge. She had a bacterial infection on her buttocks recently as well, for which the pediatrician prescribed bactroban. When I took her to the doctor about her vagina, he said it looked like a bacterial infection and to use the bactroban at her vaginal opening. I did this for a week and everything seemed better, although she complained of discomfort after I applied the medicine. I also used baking soda in her bath during this time. Now off the treatment for a week, she has begun to complain about the discomfort in her privates again. What do I do now_? Should I take her to my GYN_?

Answer : Dear Mum, I think your daughter may be having a urinary infection. Please get her Urine examination done to look for number of pus cells` if more than 6-8, then the probability is high the symptoms are of urinary infection. In the meanwhile, get your daughter to drink large amount of fluids during the day to dilute the urine and also ask your daughter to sit in a hot water basin to soak the private parts for 10 mins twice a day. If urinary infection is present, then antibiotic will need to be given and further work up needs to be done. Dr Vivek Rege
